A Step Toward Meaningful Reconciliation

Building Understanding Through Truth
TRUE took an important step in our reconciliation journey by hosting a First Nations Truth Telling session in Cairns. Led by Sheryl Sandy, Community Engagement & Culture | Equity, Diversity & Cross-Cultural Integration Specialist, the session created space for acknowledging difficult historical truths about the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples since colonisation.
The session addressed challenging topics including historical sexual violence, disease transmission, exploitation, and their ongoing impacts on First Nations communities. While these conversations can be difficult, they are essential for building genuine understanding and respect.
Truth Why Truth Telling Matters
Truth telling is a fundamental component of our Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). By acknowledging historical disadvantages and injustices, we create opportunities for:
- Building more authentic relationships with First Nations communities
- Developing greater cultural awareness and sensitivity among our team
- Creating organisational practices that respect and honour First Nations perspectives
- Establishing a foundation for meaningful action toward reconciliation
Moving Forward Together
This session is part of our ongoing commitment to education and understanding. In the coming months, we will continue to provide opportunities for learning and engagement as we work toward implementing all aspects of our RAP.
We extend our sincere thanks to Sheryl Sandy for her expertise, guidance, and commitment to this important work.
