If you're considering a vasectomy as a long-term contraceptive option, our Brisbane clinic offers a monthly vasectomy clinic with Dr Russell Hunter, an experienced vasectomist and GP with more than 35 years of experience. Dr Hunter has a special interest in vasectomy procedures and family planning, providing clients with expert care and advice throughout the process.
What is a Vasectomy?
A vasectomy is a safe and effective procedure that prevents pregnancy by stopping sperm from being released into semen.
During the procedure, the vas deferens, the two thin tubes that carry sperm from the testes to the penis, are blocked. This is typically achieved by cutting and sealing the tubes. Although the testes continue to produce sperm, the sperm can no longer travel through the vas deferens and are instead naturally absorbed by the body.
After a vasectomy, semen is still ejaculated during sexual activity, but it no longer contains sperm, thereby preventing pregnancy.

How long does the procedure take?
The vasectomy procedure itself takes approximately 40 minutes. Clients should allow around two hours for their appointment, which includes an initial consultation and the procedure.
Recovery and aftercare
Most clients can drive themselves home following their vasectomy.
Recovery times vary from person to person. While some people return to normal activities almost immediately, others may require a few days of rest and recovery. It may also take several weeks before you feel comfortable returning to your usual level of sexual activity
How to book
A referral is not required to book a vasectomy appointment.
Appointments can be booked over the phone or online through HotDoc.
