TRUE Cairns Sexual Assault Service (CSAS) therapist, Sarah Ayache, delivered a professional development session for Victim Assist Queensland Cairns staff on 28 October 2025 as part of their Sexual Violence Awareness Month campaign.
During the session, Ms. Ayache addressed critical topics including barriers faced by child victim survivors, the impact of childhood sexual abuse, attachment challenges, how children adapt to survive traumatic experiences, and the psychological impact of grooming. Her presentation provided valuable insights into trauma-informed approaches for supporting young survivors.
Ms. Ayache brought extensive expertise to the discussion, drawing on 20 years of experience working with adults and children affected by complex trauma and adverse childhood experiences. Previously a lecturer at the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom, her specialised training includes work with sexual offending cases and harmful sexualised behaviours exhibited by young people.
In her current role with TRUE Cairns Sexual Assault Service Ms. Ayache is part of the team that provides a safe and inclusive environment for anyone aged 12 years and over who has been impacted by sexual violence. The service welcomes individuals regardless of gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, cultural background, or personal values, ensuring accessible support for all community members.
The professional development session reflected Victim Assist Queensland’s ongoing commitment to enhancing trauma-informed practices and improving outcomes for vulnerable community members, particularly child survivors of sexual violence.
