Cultural Frameworks, Health Literacy and Equitable Access

Within True’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health projects we seek to increase reproductive and sexual health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations, including those who identify as LGBTIQ+ Sistergirl and Brotherboy.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander populations need reproductive and sexual health literacy materials that are embedded within cultural frameworks. Some reproductive and sexual health needs may be general such as the prevention of sexually transmitted infections, or access to contraceptive choices. Other reproductive or sexual health needs may relate to specific experiences of Sistergirl or Brotherboy identities, intergenerational trauma, family violence, or broader health inequities. True facilitates a series of community health literacy projects that seek to increase reproductive and sexual health literacy in urban, regional and remote areas of Queensland.

True supports health services to provide equitable reproductive and sexual health facilities and supports education services to provide accessible relationships and sexuality education. This professional support is provided online and face to face through education and training, mentoring and support, collaboration and referral.

True values young and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders who are working towards Reproductive and Sexual Health outcomes for communities. True offers various scholarship and mentoring opportunities for students, emerging academics, and young professionals.
