Modules 1 & 2

This course is for medical practitioners who wish to expand their knowledge and develop their clinical skills in reproductive and sexual health, including contraception, cervical screening, sexually transmissible infections (STIs), menopause, men's sexual health, common gynaecological conditions and other topics in reproductive and sexual health.


  • Qualified medical practitioner
  • MBBS or equivalent – GPT3 (General Practice Term 3) or above, currently working in General Practice
  • Medical Board of Australia registration
  • Current indemnity insurance

Course content

This nationally recognised course in reproductive and sexual health consists of three modules.

Module 1 comprises Theory. The 15 hours pre and post online activities and three-day theory module is designed to provide participants with sound evidence-based knowledge in reproductive and sexual health, and the opportunity to discuss issues from their own clinical practice.

  • Sexually transmitted infections

  • Cervical screening
  • Breast health
  • Men’s health
  • Preconception

Module 2 comprises Assessment - role play assessment and a written assessment comprising of a multiple choice/short answer based questionnaire. The content for this assessment is drawn from pre-reading online and face-to-face material. The assessment is required to be completed and passed prior to commencing the clinical attachment.

It is possible to undertake the Modules 1 & 2 with True and Module 3 in another state. The participant will need to contact the family planning organisation in their selected state to arrange for a clinical attachment (fees and arrangements may vary).

Course objectives

  • To describe and identify reproductive and sexual health issues
  • To demonstrate expertise in clinical examinations and procedures in the field of reproductive and sexual health
  • To discuss with clients issues in sexual and preventative health care, and be able to explain approaches to management

Course materials

The course materials provided include:

  • Pre and post online readings, videos and activities (approx 15 hrs)
  • Sexual Health & Family Planning Australia. (Fourth Edition 2016). Contraception: an Australian clinical practice handbook
  • PowerPoint presentation handouts


Modules 1 & 2 : Assessment will be based upon full attendance, a short answer/multiple choice case study-based written exam and clinical role plays to assess sexual history taking and communication skills prior to being accepted into clinical training.  Participants are required to pass 70% of written and 60% of role play scenarios.  Upon successful completion, a Certificate of Attendance - Theory & Assessment will be issued (Module 3 is not required to attain this certificate). 

Module 3 : Upon completion of Modules 1,2 & 3, the full FPAA National Certificate in Reproductive & Sexual Health for Doctors will be issued.
