Tackling the rising incidence of sexually transmitted infections among young Queenslanders.
Supported by funding from the Central Queensland, Wide Bay, Sunshine Coast PHN, earlier this year True developed Is it True, a program developed to tackle the rising incidence of sexually transmitted infections among young Queenslanders.
Aimed at senior high school students, Is It True provided in-school education sessions for senior students to access up to date information on respectful relationships, sexual health and contraception. During our pilot students were also provided with an opportunity to attend a confidential appointment for sexual health screening, with a True clinician.
Key achievements from the pilot, which was completed in June:
- 74 students took part in a sexual health consultation
- 55 had screens for sexually transmitted infections
- The feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive with a large number asking that the program be made available again
- Following the pilot, students have been supported with an Is it True appointment card to encourage regular and ongoing reproductive and sexual health care from local youth-friendly providers
Work is underway to secure funding for a continuation of the Is It True program.
