Mental illness in general is common in Australia with one in five Australians experiencing a mental illness at some stage in their lives and many experiencing more than one mental illness at one time.

Simple ways of improving your mood include: regular physical activity; remembering one good thing in your day before you go to sleep at night; getting enough sleep, staying connected with at least a few family and friends, avoiding alcohol and smiling.


On average, 1 in 8 men will have depression and 1 in 5 men will experience anxiety at some stage of their lives.

While women are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, men are less likely to talk about it. This increases the risk of their depression or anxiety going unrecognised and untreated.

Depression is a high risk factor for suicide and, in Australia, there are approximately 2,200 suicides each year – 80% are by men, with an average of 5 men taking their lives every single day. Suicide is the leading cause of death for men under the age of 44, significantly exceeding the national road toll.


Women experience some mental health problems (including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress) at higher rates than men.

In fact, 1 in 5 women in Australia will experience depression and 1 in 3 women will experience anxiety during their lifetime.
